🔍 What You’ll Learn: Winning Summary Judgment: Strategies, Discovery, and Drafting

Summary judgment can end a case—or save one—but only if it’s handled strategically. This focused program is designed to give you a clear, practical understanding of how to approach summary judgment motions in both Illinois state and federal courts, with an emphasis on what actually works in practice.

You’ll gain a structured, step-by-step framework for handling summary judgment from start to finish, including how to think about the motion early in the case, how to develop the record during discovery, and how to position your arguments for maximum impact. The program also addresses the critical differences between state and federal practice—particularly the procedural nuances that can make or break your motion.

From there, the faculty walk through the core components of effective summary judgment practice: selecting the right arguments, organizing your evidence, and drafting persuasive, well-supported motions and responses. You’ll also learn how to approach statements of undisputed facts and responses in a way that strengthens your position rather than undermines it—an area where even experienced attorneys often make costly mistakes.

Throughout the program, the speakers highlight common pitfalls and strategic missteps on both sides of the motion, along with practical guidance on how to avoid them. The goal is not just to explain the rules, but to give you the tools and judgment needed to use summary judgment effectively in real cases.

Whether you are bringing or opposing a motion, this program will leave you better equipped to build a stronger record, craft more persuasive arguments, and avoid the procedural traps that can derail your case.

A must attend for newer lawyers.” – Christopher Williams, Esq.

“Speakers were very knowledgeable and clearly explained the topic.  The handout is very helpful as well.” – Matthew Dobbs, Esq.
