🔍 What You’ll Learn: Depositions 101: Essential Skills and Strategies – Available Via OnDemand Streaming, Downloads, CDs and DVDs
Depositions are a cornerstone of effective litigation strategy — and they require skill, foresight, and finesse. Whether you’re taking, defending, or using depositions at trial, success depends on understanding people as much as procedure.
This two-part OnDemand seminar brings together experienced litigators and judges to walk you through every phase of the deposition process, from planning to execution. You’ll learn how to approach depositions with clear objectives, manage difficult witnesses and opposing counsel, and use deposition testimony strategically at hearings or trial.
Your faculty will also provide depo demonstrations for most of the critical sessions and/or show you video of past depos they took, to illustrate their points.
Part 1 covers fundamentals such as scheduling challenges, rule differences, strategic planning, and ethical pitfalls. You’ll also learn to prepare both percipient and expert witnesses effectively — even when they’re uncooperative — and to evaluate when a deposition is truly necessary.
Part 2 explores the real-world challenges litigators face once the deposition begins. You’ll see demonstrations of effective objection handling, impeachment techniques, online deposition strategies, and methods for maintaining control when witnesses or opposing counsel push boundaries.
By watching this program, you’ll learn how to:
- Conduct focused, goal-driven depositions that advance your case strategy
- Prepare witnesses for success — and handle those who won’t cooperate
- Manage objections and impeach strategically without losing control
- Apply state and federal rules confidently
- Handle exhibits, documents, and online depos with precision
- Maintain professionalism under pressure, even with difficult counsel
This is practical, real-world training you can revisit anytime — ideal for litigators who want to strengthen their deposition skills on their own schedule.
